Do insurance companies Pay for GLP-1 drugs
It depends on which GLP-1 medication, why it’s being prescribed, and your insurance plan.
In general:
- For type 2 diabetes: Many insurance plans cover GLP-1 medications when they’re approved for diabetes treatment, such as Ozempic, Trulicity, or Mounjaro (coverage varies).
- For weight loss: Coverage is much more variable. Some plans cover weight-management versions such as Wegovy or Zepbound, but many employer plans exclude weight-loss drugs.
- Medicare: Generally does not cover GLP-1 drugs solely for obesity/weight loss (rules can change), but may cover certain GLP-1 drugs for approved conditions like diabetes.
- Medicaid: Coverage differs by state.
Even when covered, you may have:
- prior authorization requirements
- proof of diagnosis (e.g., diabetes, BMI criteria)
- step therapy (trying another medication first)
- copays or deductibles
The quickest way to check:
- Look up your plan’s drug formulary.
- Search the exact drug name (not just “GLP-1”).
- Call the number on your insurance card and ask: “Is [drug] covered for [my diagnosis], and what are the requirements?
This does not generally apply to VA but should make you wonder if you ARE NOT diabetic.
